Our History

The history of The Kerrygold Company reflects nearly ninety years of consistent growth and achievement. From the days of Adams supplying the earliest pre packed butter, delivered by dray horse, to building Europe's most advanced cheese preparation facility we have always been at the forefront of development within the dairy sector.

The company that has become Kerrygold can be traced back to 1922 in Leek, Staffordshire, where to this day we continue to operate. In that year, the Adams family established a small business selling milk direct from the dairy and packing butter under the Adams brand. It didn't take them long to establish a strong reputation and they soon expanded.

Forty years later, Adams continued to prosper and had become a national butter brand. They then became agents for the Irish Dairy Board, taking responsibility for selling Irish butter and other dairy products into the UK.

In the 1970's Adams became a wholly owned subsidiary of The Irish Dairy Board and Adams Butter became Adams Food Limited.

During the 1980's the group reverted to its core business and The Kerrygold Company and Adams Food Ingredients were created.

In May 1990, Kerrygold moved from their old site within Leek to a purpose built site at Sunnyhills Road.

The Kerrygold Company began to build on its past successes and soon established itself as the largest packer of cheese in the UK and Ireland. Customers now include major retailers, food service businesses, contract packing customers and independent cheese producers seeking a route to market.

In 2008 Kerrygold invested £30m in state-of-the-art facility at the existing Sunnyhills site, increasing production capacity and efficiency and incorporating the very latest green technologies.
